Right, and as proven by your search, I believe that there is a market out there for this type of vehicle; something that hauls all of our "stuff" and provides an inside bed at night.

I just saw an ad for the True North Freelance OSV and was immediately intrigued. My family and I live in Colorado and are avid whitewater rafting fans, and also overnight hike/camp in CO. I did some web research for similar class vehicles and found none that had the simplicity, usability for the price. Airstream offers a "Basecamp" for more than double the price of the Freelance, and Adventure Trailers offers a teardrop model, that appears half the size for the same amount. Despite the lack of bells and whistles, I believe the OSV to be just as described, a support vehicle for the outdoors, not an RV.

in-a-tent - right, more open space for bicycles and such and just a fold-up bed. I don't know about the UK, but here in the states there is probably an advantage for the builder, from a regulatory standpoint, in that no gas lines run into the living space.

VE - I'm going to tell your inlaws about this... :)
