Mike - Joseph H. Stewart State Park is really nice and you can reserve sites. Mazama (http://tinyurl.com/l4lnky) is inside the park and is first-come, first served (no reservations). It seemed kind of close to the road, to me - but I didn't drive through it, so maybe it goes back a ways of the highway. There are some other state parks nearby, too (Jackson Kimball, Collier, Stewart, etc.).

Roy,
I am planning a trip to crater lake, and would like to camp in the surrounding area, not within the park (if that's even an option), could you please suggest a key car camping spot for a family?

Thanks,
mikesalmon

It was a bit chilly - heh. It was at least 95F/35C outside though, so it felt pretty good.

John - that's funny, my parents said the same thing. They've lived in Oregon for many years and have only been there once.

This is a truly spectacular part of our planet. I live in Australia and am amazed at how much water you have near snow-capped peaks. I see the children have swimmers on but can they swim or is the water too cold?

Roy, you've got some great shots in this post. I've been to Crater Lake, but not for several years, even though it's only about 2.5 hours away. Hopefully this summer!
